I had just walked in the door from work, barely had even set my laptop bag and purse down, much less caught my breath from rushing home or said ‘hello’ to my husband. The kids nearly tackled me for hugs and were telling me all about their day. Then came the question… “Mommy, will take us for a family bike ride?”
So many reasons to say “no” to that request. I was still in work clothes and really wanted a minute to settle into being home. It was August, so probably really hot outside, not typically a time of year for bike riding. What I explained to Ryan, though, was I had a pilates class later that evening so didn’t have time for a bike ride before dinner.
“But, Mommy, you’ll get your exercise on the bike ride!”
How do you argue with such logic from a 4 year old? So, I agreed to a compromise – a short bike ride around the block, not our usual longer ride all over the neighborhood.
As we rode, I realized what I would have missed had I stuck to my “no”. I would have missed this precious time with my kids. This time where we’re disconnected – no phones, no TV, no computer. Just outside exercising together. Usually a chance to talk and catch up on the day as we ride together through the neighborhood.
I did, in fact, get a good exercise that afternoon as our bike ride turned into a little more than just around the block. The weather was unexpectedly pleasant for August, so it turned out to be a nice evening for bike riding.
What better way to exercise than with my kids, helping to model an active lifestyle – something I’m just now learning myself as I’m raising two very active kids.
The best time spent is that spent with those whom we love.
Later, I did go to my pilates class. Double the exercise and double the blessings to spend time with both my kids and my friends.
How are you spending your time today?
